Social Justice Spreads Reflection
Creating this social issue of racism was a deeply personal journey for me. As I worked on it, I found myself really wrestling with the weight of the Black Lives Matter movement and the reality of systemic racism. Every little detail in the design was chosen carefully to try to capture just how urgent and complicated this issue is. Starting with that black rectangle in the background was a no-brainer for me. I wanted to set a serious tone right from the get-go, you know? It's like shining a spotlight on the darkness that surrounds discussions of racism and discrimination. It's not an easy topic to confront, but it's necessary.
Putting the "Black Lives Matter" image front and center was important. I wanted to make sure that the message was loud and clear. This movement is about fighting for equality and justice, and that needed to be the heart of the spread. Trying to create that fading effect with the flag image was tricky, though. I wanted it to symbolize the slow progress we're making, but also the struggles and setbacks along the way. It took a lot of tweaking and adjusting to get it just right, but I think it paid off in the end.
The phrase "Racism Is A Pandemic" was a gut-punch moment for me. It's such a powerful statement that really drives home just how widespread and ingrained racism is in our society. I wanted to make sure it stood out, so I played around with filters and adjustment layers to give it some extra oomph. Adding in symbols like the stop racism sign and the "I can't breathe" phrase was a no-brainer. These are powerful reminders of the injustices faced by black people every day. I wanted viewers to feel that emotional punch in the gut, you know? To really sit with the weight of what's at stake.
But maybe the most impactful part of the spread for me was the image of the glasses filled with discrimination, looking at a black individual. It's such a stark representation of how bias and prejudice shape our interactions and perceptions. It's a call to really examine our own biases and how they contribute to systemic racism. Throughout the whole process, I felt this responsibility to do justice to the subject matter. I wanted to make sure I was representing the experiences of black people authentically and respectfully. It's not just about making something that looks good; it's about using design to spark real conversations and change.
In the end, I hope this spread serves as a wake-up call. Racism isn't something we can ignore or sweep under the rug. It's something we all need to actively work to dismantle. My hope is that this piece sparks some meaningful conversations and pushes people to really reflect on their own role in fighting for racial justice. We as a society should unite, despite the differences in culture, color, and race, we should never treat someone differently based on how they look or think, or do.
